Many faculty members of the Faculty of Law have earned doctorates in related fields, and the faculty includes a number of the world`s greatest philosophers, political scientists, political theorists, and sociologists. Interdisciplinary ideas and methods permeate the curriculum, intellectually enrich the study of law, and connect it to complex real-world problems. Intellectual life revolves around the dozen symposia that take place each year, bringing together students and faculty from NYU and other universities to discuss innovative interdisciplinary work. NYU students pursue double degrees in the arts and sciences and train as fellows through the Furman Scholars and Academic Careers programs. You choose from over 300 courses to plan a program that suits your intellectual and professional interests. You can choose to specialize in one or two areas or take a wide range of courses. You also have the option of writing a thesis in close consultation with a professor or expanding a typical research task to a master`s thesis. Experienced doctoral advisors will help you choose courses to achieve your goals. Because many students who plan to attend law school are naturally focused on verbal disciplines, they tend to avoid courses that include quantitative data.

However, understanding basic economic principles is increasingly important in law school analysis, and courses in economics, finance, business organization, and introduction to accounting are highly recommended. NYU Law prepares students for innovative careers in law and technology. Our alumni have served as general counsel for key players such as Twitter, Verizon, Reddit, Dropbox and Grubhub. There is no major or formal prelaw program at NYU, and so a prelaw student is simply the one who defines himself as such. As reported in the NYU College of Arts and Science Bulletin, the college supports the Association of American Law Schools` (AALS) position that a single «best» prelaw program cannot be identified. In other words, being a «pre-bar» is a mindset – knowing that you can eventually apply to law school instead of applying for a specific track or major. Pre-law students should focus on the academic areas that have the most interest and passion. Choosing a major shouldn`t depend on what you think a law school wants, but on the field that`s most likely to motivate you, whether it`s biology or English literature.

While a large number of law school applicants are political scientists, law schools do not prefer a particular major and their student body reflects a diverse academic background. That being said, there are academic skills and areas that legal programs look for in a student`s academic history, which are listed below. Each JD degree applicant must be in full-time continuous attendance by successfully completing at least 12 credits each semester (with the exception of the summer session), unless the Dean of Studies is put on leave by the Dean of Studies before the beginning of the semester. Leave is only granted for valid reasons and only to students who have a good academic reputation. For each semester on leave, the registration and service fees will be maintained. A leave of absence does not extend the five-year period provided for the acquisition of the JD diploma. The law is based on a set of basic principles that are reflected in fundamental areas such as contracts, torts, criminal law, property, constitutional law and civil procedure law. These courses are taught almost everywhere during the first year of law school. Most law students do not fully understand what legal education is until they are familiar with the study of these topics. Elective courses in the second and third years are based on the basic principles learned in the first year. The student who takes a variety of law-related courses cannot expect to gain an orderly understanding of the legal basis. Students who overload these courses may mistakenly believe that they have gained a head start by entering law school.

Moreover, when you take such courses, you will sacrifice the broader liberal arts experience that will likely serve you best in the graduate program. In short, while law-related courses can help you decide if law is an area you are interested in and may familiarize you with new vocabulary, undergraduate law courses will not help you enter law school, nor will it help you measurably once you are there. Beware of a professor`s claims that a particular bachelor`s course will improve law school grades. You have the freedom to shape your own academic experience in the Master of Laws programme or one of our eight LLM specialisations. In each of our programs, you will find a smaller community within the larger law school and faculty directors to guide and inspire you. You can combine one of LLM`s degrees with the Advanced Certificate in Law and Business. Most law schools explicitly advise against taking a category of courses of a professional nature (e.g., «Business Law»).
