From student lectures to legal advice, the clinic offers exciting work experiences every Wednesday that are valuable to all students studying a law degree. How does working in a practicing legal clinic compare to conferences and seminars and how do you feel? Lawyers from the pro bono department are on call during the clinic sessions on Wednesday afternoons to work exclusively with our students and Coventry University. The Law Center offers you the attention that you unfortunately cannot get in a conference. This gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from the conferences to consulting clients. It also allows you to experience a law firm during a working day. As a volunteer, you will learn important privacy and customer service issues. It is very difficult to refer to these basic principles in a conference. The clinic`s goal is to provide hands-on legal experience by integrating our students into an office environment and working with clients alongside trained lawyers and lawyers.

I was excited and eager to get started, I was aware of the importance of practical legal work experience and I wanted to get an idea of how the law works in practice. The opportunity at the Law Centre gave me the kind of work that a lawyer does on a daily basis. I made sure to research the Law Centre so that I could strengthen my application and show my passion for being part of the legal clinic. The opportunity to work with a Magic Circle law firm is incredible. Each week, I called a member of Allen and Overy to discuss issues related to the law and clarify the advice I should give to the client. I was also a fantastic opportunity to network as we talked informally about the law in general and how they started their «legal career» and what advice they could offer. The partnership that has been formed benefits both the student volunteers and, ultimately, the client, as the client receives consistent legal advice from an expert in the field of labour law. We help the Coventry Law Centre empower local people by promoting legal solutions. Each week, the clinic will see 6 clients, so the clinic will help up to 120 clients over the semesters! Our students participate in everything the lawyers at the Law Center do, with supervisors currently working in practice and experts in specific areas of law. They gain hands-on experience with reserved legal activities and so far offer supervised advice and support to over 500 residents.

Working at the Law Center rather than in an amphitheater reminds you that you are definitely in the big world to overcome challenges and find solutions to problems. In college, I usually learn the theoretical side of law, but working at the legal clinic means providing service to clients. It is fascinating to see how lawyers think and how they apply the law according to the client`s situation. Each year, 12 to 15 students in the 2nd and 3rd years are recruited, who are ready for a one-year commitment to the clinic. Students have access to our advocacy room, which offers students the opportunity to experience a modern courtroom in an academic setting. Our prestigious annual moot court competition uses this facility, allowing students to develop their advocacy skills in a mock call.

I really enjoyed interviewing clients. It helped me improve my communication skills, but also allowed me to apply the law to a real-life scenario. Sometimes the cases were quite complicated, but they were the best as they allowed me to examine the path to the nest to help the client. Covid-19: We have set up a student hub to support and advise law students. And if that`s still not enough, Allen and Overy Solicitors – a leading multinational law firm Magic Circle – are participating in a pilot project with our clinic to provide advice and guidance to our students. Caroline Texeira Gouveia, a second-year course representative, shares some of her own thoughts on mental health issues and seeking support during her studies during a pandemic.
